Beach Walk

Beach Walk

he geography of my life's journey has often been dramatic and affected by seasonal tides. The invading constant movement of the sea claiming land intrigues me.

The varied beauty and slippery dangers of these Hervey Bay rocks are washed by a living liquid force akin to the inevitable circumstances that shape our lives and reveal the truth of our being. In this painting I wanted to show particularly the movement of water...(there is a tendency for painters to portray beach scenes with what I call "frozen waves").....colours come and go, with different glazes and wash over my preliminary drawing marks .... I wish for nothing to be stationary in this work. If you are interested in purchasing this painting please CONTACT me for details.

Broken Head Pathway

Broken Head Pathway

Pathways have been a re-occurring feature in some of my works.  I portray them to show a more close-up physical view of my journey.  The travelling through a dark time in my life where things seem to press in on me and force me to tread carefully over twisted roots and small stones and sharp twigs that sometimes snap and bruise my flesh.  But I know that this pathway of mine is lit well enough for me to see my way and I am drawn steadily on by the comforting much stronger light up ahead that will bring me out into a safe secure place once more.    This particular painting's reference was given to me by my daughter after a holiday visit to that area and it is now in her possession.

If you would like a similar painting to this.....I am available for commissions and you can contact me if you just go to the CONTACT PAGE for details.

Macleay Mangroves

Macleay Mangroves

I developed a love/hate relationship with the landscape of Macleay's foreshore where I lived for six and a half years.   Sand was a precious item that only appeared tidally, amongst the threatening advance of hordes of "loopy" mangrove roots (Greenies are their friends!)  My life's journey has often echoed this landscape...."Careful how you walk, lest something trip you up...stop you from enjoying the pleasures of the beautiful sea."  SOME VEGETATION IS NOT PRETTY!  Hopefully I convey a certain agitation here – a lurking darkness – and some sensual overtones through the use of strong line, and a particular range of colours and brush movement to evoke the mood.

Outgoing Tide

Outgoing Tide

I just love the contrast of Negative and Positive Space Areas.    Although the Sea area is so much greater than the actual Sand area in the original spot that I gained my reference from....I wanted to show that more important to me at the time was the area I was standing in.   The sea had been there a short while before....I could still feel the tug of it on my feet.  If I walked forward I could submerge myself in it and my smallness would be so evident to me.  I could experience a different form of life, be washed, float above, or be covered by the liquid turquoise green.   But for a time that water had receded and I could view my circumstances clearly and gain knowledge from them – see the rocks - even the partly submerged ones, harmless now – from a distance....and beautiful again.

Sunset Puddle

Sunset Puddle

Walking along the foreshore of Cleveland Point Queensland just on sunset in early spring 2011 - I came upon this great scene of a cluster of seabirds bathing in a puddle formed on a concrete pad. I quickly grabbed my husband's phone camera and took a couple of shots just in time before all the colour left the skies. The reflections are particularly restful I think and I hope I have captured some of the beauty of Moreton Bay in this work.

Tidal Movement

Tidal Movement

The beauty of the constant movement of the sea as it invades and claims the land intrigues me. Waves are a living liquid force and the current artistic portrayal of them in "frozen static style" misconstrues them. The varied coloured beauty of these foreshore rocks at Hervey Bay that are revealed as waters approach and recede, hides the danger of falling under their slippery power. I have aimed to achieve by strong line and brush movement how I see the parallels of my life to Nature's own landscape.

Urangan Beach Rocks

Urangan Beach Rocks

Whilst on holidays at Hervey Bay I took lots of photographs of the Urangan Beach Pier...a magnificent long structure that had beside it these strong dark rocks that I absolutely loved for their powerful shapes and steely colouring. I was reminded of the times when we have to climb over difficult circumstances...even slip and slide sometimes. Or we might be bruised and cut by the sharpness of a friend's comments, and yet we climb on because what awaits us is a large space of rest and beauty with cool refreshing waters to cleanse our body spirit and soul. Our Creator God has given us this earthly beauty not just to enjoy in the natural but to contemplate His great plans He has for us and His Grace and Goodness that is available if we draw near to Him.

View from Broken Head

View from Broken Head

This painting was commissioned by a man who grew up in the Broken Heads area. I particularly enjoyed painting the rocks and the waves breaking upon them. When he was a child his mother used to take him down there and he remembered slipping on them a few times. This kind of information was good background for me to know as I could put some emotional feeling into the way the sea was using its power against the coastline in a forceful destructive way and yet achieving a beauty as well.

If you would like a painting of a scene that you wish to remember please CONTACT me to discuss your project.

BROKEN HEAD ROCKS 2.

BROKEN HEAD ROCKS 2.

The geography of my life’s journey has often been dramatic and affected by seasonal tides and rocky pathways. In so many of my art works I have explored this theme…showing the difficulties, surprising twists and turns and also the glorious summits and safe harbours often reached.

The constant movement of the sea as it invades and claims the land also intrigues me and far from just representing it as a beautiful natural creation - I wish to liken it to a living liquid force akin to the inevitable circumstances that shape our lives and reveal the truth of our being. I endeavour to bring viewers on my journey and through these works provoke them to see parallels in the natural landscape’s form and beauty…with the inner trackings of our personal emotional and spiritual lives.

These Broken Head Rocks appear as a powerful force….almost a barrier…to the goal of the endless sea of life…but seasoned travellers know that they will stumble upon quiet pools occasionally.
